We started again! The first Souper of this year was with Marit Overbeek (journalist and web editor at BIMmedia) and Mieke Vulling oprichterster & directrice van platform Mimoa.) Both ladies experimenting on the Internet and are active in the city.

BIMmedia with titles like Cobouw, De Architect and Vastgoedmarkt is an example of an integrated approach in the design, construction and real estate industry. Yet still there to win a world according to Marit. She try to connect online the different blood groups. With her relentless enthusiasm this mission is on track. She misses architects online empowerment. Architects always have a opinion. A few people only make the effort to say something about the profession in relation to other disciplines in the media.

The user-generated architecture guide of Mieke is for city fans from around the world a convenient mobile application. For architects, it is a nice showcase to promote realized work. Mieke is full of plans to expand her platform. The global reach of the application and the rising interest in cities make this on paper possible. At the same time investments are high and earnings difficult. It is painful to see that architecture under a very broad group of people is popular, but fewer and fewer people appreciate architects.

The online reality seemingly leads to a need to do something else in the physical world. Marit literally builds bridges for the spatial development of Utrecht and Mieke gardens at the Rotterdam river Maas and works as a pioneer of energy.

Vineum was the setting for this beautiful and interesting evening. This restaurant was new to everyone at the table. Nice table. Good food. We are going more often to this place.

Ralph Brodrück (teacher/ researcher TU Eindhoven) and Jacco van der Linden were our guests on the last Monday of October. The decor was again, the culinary never dull, restaurant Huson.

Ralph focuses on phenomenology and Jacco is an independent architect in Amsterdam. Thinking by making and making by thinking are for both men an important attitude, the head and hands together design.

In a very cheerful atmosphere discussed a array of topics. The themes of education, technology, art and economics exchanged rapidly. Knowledge of all these issues and the ability to switch between these subjects was impressive.

In many subjects specializing was appointed this evening as the T-Man. I had never heard of it. Ralf and Jacco themselves are two good examples.

Daan Bakker (Daf-architecten), Jeroen de Willigen (DeZwarteHond), Jasper de Haan (architect) and I invite each month a number of colleagues to eat, drink and discuss about our profession, the city of Rotterdam and related matters.

On Friday, September 12th, there was a special Souper in Venice. At our table we had Ankie Schellekens (owner Venice Planner), architect/ photographer Giovanni Vio (phd IUAV) and architect Silvia Dainese (studio GRISDAINESE). Later architect Stefano Gris (studio GRISDAINESE) also joined us.

The exhibition Monditalia at the Architecture Biennale was a good input to talk to people who live in Venice. Monditalia shows that the country has a nice history, but also a very uncertain future in many ways. Living and working in Italy in general and in Venice in particular are obvious themes for this evening with people from the tourism industry and architecture business.

80,000 tourists visit Venice each day, while the population has now dropped to 60,000. No one has an idea how population decline and mass tourism can tolerate each other well. In Ankie these phenomena come together. She lived for many years in the city center and she conducts a visit to the city tailored for different types of businesses. Pleasant reside in Venice finally has everything to do with the precise organization of the stay of visitors to the city.

Giovanni and Silvia work in a country that has one architect per 450 inhabitants This density is outstanding. In the Netherlands, for example, there is only one architect per 1650 inhabitants. Both have broadened their design activities. Giovanni with research and the office of Silvia also designs many temporary structures for exhibitions and retail.

We have learned a lot about living in Venice and working in Italy from our pleasant and enterprising guests. The waterfront terrace of Trattoria Altanella in the district of La Giudecca was a perfect place for this special evening. The restaurant is runned over 100 years by the same family. The homemade gnocchi nero di sepia was delightful.

The guests for the first Souper in 2014 were Urban designer Peter van der Helm and architect Jeroen Hoorn. Both gentlemen have extensive knowledge about Rotterdam. Peter on the urban tissue and the program of the city. Jeroen designed for privat clients and small developers many small projects in the city. Discussion was this evening on how to transform Rotterdam carefully into a beautiful lived city by handling the tissue with its existing buildings with love. Peter and Jeroen tells us how buildings, streets, neighbourhoods can be upgraded with a minimum breaking force

Souper #1 Monday, January 27th was exactly five years ago. The guest list is growing steadily and we have the idea that we are far from finished eating. We will have no more food in restaurant in the renovated Town Hall Hilton Hotel. The food was nothing special and the service was really bad

Daan Bakker (Daf-architecten), Jeroen de Willigen (DeZwarteHond), Jasper de Haan (architect) and I invite each month a number of colleagues to eat, drink and discuss about our profession, the city of Rotterdam and related matters.

The item on the Rotterdam Architecture Prize in 2013, only in Dutch.
